Do you find yourself having cravings for foods that you know are not healthy for you? I’m often ask how to quit eating junk food. So, today I’m going to share my secret tips to unchain you from those cravings that are currently holding you hostage.
Before I share my tips, you might find it interesting to know that in my earlier years I was addicted to sugar. In particular I drank 15 Pepsi’s per day. In addition to the Pepsi’s, I was also drinking alcoholic beverages with additional Pepsi, or Sloe Gin and Orange Juice, Amaretto, or whatever sweet alcoholic beverage I happened to be enjoying at the time. I also loaded my plate with pasta, bread and french fries and all sorts of foods filled with huge amount of simple carbohydrates including plenty of deserts. I was lucky enough to have one of those metabolisms that allowed me to burn all of those calories, but my pancreas suffered from that abuse. So needless to say, I know a thing or two about overcoming cravings and sugar addictions.
Today, sugar is a treat that I rarely ever indulge in and what I find interesting is that the indulgence is rarely worth the price I pay, in that it depletes my energy and I end up feeling sluggish the following day.
At the root of most cravings is sugar. Keep in mind that simple carbs convert into sugar. In fact there is some indication now that it’s the sugar in alcoholic beverages that is what people are addicted to, rather than the alcohol itself. Even a chocolate craving is actually a sugar craving, just in a different form.
You’ll want to approach the cravings with a body, mind and spirit approach to get lasting results.
Body
One of the fastest ways I’ve found to cut back on my sugar intake is to eat small healthy meals/snacks every two hours. This helps to keep your insulin levels more balanced so you are far less likely to crave sugar. It’s also been found that eating foods with artificial sweeteners, causes you to crave sugar because the sweetener doesn’t actually satisfy the body’s urges for sugar. In fact some studies show that artificial sweeteners may be one of the leading causes of obesity, because you continue to eat in an attempt to satisfy the desire for sugar.
Some of the healthy snacks that I recommend, based on my research are fresh fruits and vegetables, along with nuts, seeds. Once you get in the habit of eating small healthy snacks you’ll discover that you have more energy and definitely less cravings.
Mind
When it comes to sugar cravings, I recommend that you look at any underlying feelings and emotions that relate to how you feel about the sweetness in your life. If you are unhappy with your life in any way, you are likely missing the sweetness that life has to offer you. When we living a balanced life on your own terms, you will find sweetness in your life without having to attempt to satisfy it by filling yourself with sugars.
You may also want to look at how you are feeling about being nourished. Are you feeding your soul and nourishing it by doing what you love or starving it by doing everything but what you love? If so, your cravings are there in an attempt to help you fill a void.
Decide today that you are going to find sweetness in your life everyday and that you are going to nourish your soul. This can be done in several ways, such as making sure that you do something you enjoy doing, every single day. Allow others to help you, instead of suffering through doing all of the chores yourself.
Start a gratitude practice, you’ll be amazed at how much better you feel about life, when focus your attention on what you are grateful for each day. The media, for the most part, has us focused on the bad things happening in the world, and we get so caught up in those things we forget about all of the good things going on around us. No wonder we can’t find sweetness in our lives. Be grateful for the hot water in your shower, the indoor toilet, and more. Not everyone on planet earth has those luxuries.
Spirit
Another important aspect to release cravings is to visualize yourself happy, healthy and actively doing what you love every day. Even if you aren’t yet doing what you love all of the time, the power of visualization of this sort puts you in the same state of mind as if you actually were already doing those things. In addition to it helping you to feel more nourished you will also be able to find more sweetness in your day to day life. The more you do this type of visualization the more opportunities will show up in your life to support you to have a happier, healthier life.
