Yesterday, Morgana visited Eric Van Der Hope at Eric’s Book Marketing Minute, where they talked about the basics of financial alchemy, getting published and how to set fees.
Today, I’d like to share with you a recent interview I had with Morgana when I got to ask her some questions on why smart/skilled people get stuck around money, why living a charmed life is not egocentric and how money can get in the way of love. I hope you enjoy it.

Krystalya Marie’: I know a lot of very smart and highly skilled people who get stuck around money. Can you tell my readers why that is? And more importantly, how can they get unstuck?
Morgana Rae: Yes, yes. See, the part of us that pursues excellence, helps others, and gives value uses a different part of the brain than the part that wants to get paid. In fact, there was a brain study a couple of years ago that revealed that the part of the brain that is active when we’re generous and collaborative and in community, SHUTS DOWN as soon as the topic of money comes up!
When the topic of money comes up, this other part of the brain, the limbic brain – some people call it the reptilian brain – the survival part of the brain lights up and gets all scarce and fearful and anxious and competitive.
So what I want to do for smart, skilled, value-giving, helper people is to offer a way to get both of those parts of the brain working together in harmony. You get to be the good person and give your gifts, and also get rewarded, too.
Why is this important and how can they get unstuck? Well, I’ll say for myself that I graduated with an Ivy League education. I had a track record as a coach of producing rather miraculous results in a very short amount of time. It did not result in making money at all. Totally, totally, totally different skill!
And even after I took all the business classes I needed to take to market myself, have a sales conversation with clients, overcome objections, blah blah blah, it was like I had superhuman powers to repel money. Even when people WANTED to hire me!
Here’s what I believe, from my own experience, and from coaching thousands of people over the last ten years. Your financial situation is a direct reflection of your unconscious relationship with money.
The secret is to discover the unconscious reasons we repel and protect ourselves from money. And I gotta say, the more you care about other people, the easier it is to create an adversarial relationship with money. And you won’t even know you’re doing it!
And then you need to make that relationship real by making money a person. When you see the money monster you’re pushing away, your whole financial situation finally makes sense. And when you change that relationship, the change in your finances can be dramatic and almost instantaneous.
My book is full of case studies, like Laura Koehne, who attracted $10,000 in new clients within 48 hours. Or Elliot Malach, who made $86,000 in 6 hours. I wanted to create a way that people could do this on their own, without having to hire me as a coach, so I wrote this book.
Krystalya Marie’: In your book, you talk about living a charmed life and you share with the readers what you mean by that. Does it require a person to be egocentric and out for themselves without thinking of others?
Morgana Rae: No, it’s the opposite.
When you are egocentric and out for yourself, oh my goodness! That is the hardest and loneliest way to live. And it is the opposite of a charmed life because nothing comes easily. My approach to living a charmed life is in partnership with the universe, in alignment with yourself and your values.
When you’re not fighting with yourself, then things come easy. And it says whether the universe collaborates with you and things happen as if by magic. I’m known primarily for the money thing, but that’s only the first step.
What I discovered is if you’re having trouble getting paid and you’re having trouble attracting people who want to give you money for the value you offer, then you have an inner conflict, a hidden conflict that is pushing money away no matter what you’re doing consciously.
And when we get rid of the conflict and we put you and money and your values and love all on the same team, what happens can be so big and so fast. Like Catherine Behan, who made $3,000 the next day. Or Caroline Konnoth who made $86,000. I’m actually a little uncomfortable sharing the big numbers, because it’s not about numbers. It’s really about the inner shift, and then changes happen after that.
The point of this wok is to make money by putting LOVE first. The more unconditionally loving you are, the more you prosper.
Krystalya Marie’: Can money get in the way of love?
Morgana Rae: Absolutely! Early on I noticed that when women are financially anxious, we get very self-protective. It’s like we dry up, harden up, get masculine, and close ourselves to romantic relationship.
When men are feeling financially anxious, it’s like they’ve been emasculated. There’s a lot of shame. It’s hard to date. They often feel like they have nothing to offer their partner, or they’ve failed their loved ones. It’s tragic.
And then I discovered it doesn’t get better on the other end of the economic spectrum. I started attracting really, really wealthy clients: the seven-figure, eight-figure, nine-figure, even ten-figure billionaire client. And a pattern showed up where they’re making money and it was getting in the way of relationship. It was creating a painful distance where in some cases, it was as if they stopped being loved for themselves and they became the bank.
Their friends, lovers and family relationships–going back over a lifetime–changed when they became rich. And it was really, really painful, because suddenly everybody was out for something. And when money gets in the way of love, you have a very good unconscious incentive to get rid of the money.
And that’s why I believe so many lottery winners and instant millionaires are broke or dead within three years. A close friend of mine coaches NFL athletes because she says within three years of their getting cut from the NFL, almost all of them are broke, bankrupt or dead. And it’s not an accident.
So you need a healthy relationship with money in order to attract prosperity and keep it, without sacrificing love. You get healthy boundaries so that you do get to be a philanthropist, and you do get to leave a legacy. And you also get to honor yourself. And you become really, really good at saying no to the people who don’t really love you.
And when anybody’s operating from fear and they start to pursue a partner because that partner has money, they themselves are betraying their own value. And they are putting money in the way of love, because they’re in a relationship with this monster of scarcity that says they have to prostitute themselves and pursue somebody for money out of some kind of desperation or greed. And that’s not love.
Oh, money getting in the way of love, is that more likely to happen to men or women? I see no difference. I have one client who’s a multi-millionaire who came into the money suddenly and it destroyed all of her relationships before she came to me.
And she could not have a romantic relationship with somebody who would love her for her until we changed her relationship with money, got rid of what I call her Money Monster and established a new relationship with a “Money Honey” instead. (This is what we do in the first section of my Financial Alchemy® book.) And within a year, she attracted the sweetest, hottest, most wonderful guy who is completely not interested in her wealth. He just loves her.
